Instructions

Step 2: Gradually add the warm water, starting with ¾ cup, mixing with your hands or a sturdy spoon. Continue to add more water, a tablespoon at a time, until the mixture comes together to form a shaggy dough.
Step 3: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead the dough for 5-10 minutes until it becomes smooth, pliable, and no longer sticky. If it's too dry, add a few drops of water; if too sticky, knead in a pinch of flour.
Step 4: Once kneaded, roll out the dough to your desired thickness (typically ¼ to ½ inch) using a rolling pin. Use cookie cutters, sculpting tools, or your hands to create various shapes and figures.
Step 5: If making ornaments or items to hang, use a straw or toothpick to poke a hole in the desired location before baking. Carefully transfer your finished creations to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Step 6: Bake the salt dough creations in a preheated oven at 200°F (93°C) for 2 to 4 hours, or until they are completely hard and dry. The baking time will vary significantly based on the size and thickness of your pieces. Thicker items will require longer baking times. Alternatively, creations can be air-dried over several days, turning them periodically.
Step 7: Allow the baked salt dough creations to cool completely. Once cool, they can be painted with acrylic paints, embellished with glitter, or sealed with a clear varnish or Mod Podge for protection and a finished look.
