Ingredients

32 oz frozen tater tots
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 ½ cups milk (whole or 2%)
2 cups freshly grated sharp cheddar cheese

½ teaspoon smoked paprika
½ teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) or set your air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
Step 2: Spread the frozen tater tots in a single layer on a baking sheet (for oven) or in the air fryer basket. Ensure they are not overcrowded. If necessary, cook in batches for optimal crispiness.
Step 3: Bake for 20-25 minutes in the oven, flipping halfway through, or air fry for 15-20 minutes, shaking the basket every 5 minutes, until they are golden brown and incredibly crispy.
Step 4: While the tots are cooking, melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Sprinkle in 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour and whisk continuously for 1-2 minutes to create a smooth roux.
Step 5: Slowly whisk in 1 ½ cups of milk until the mixture is smooth and begins to thicken. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the sauce starts to bubble and coats the back of a spoon.
