1 lb (450g) Italian sausage, mild or hot, casings removed
1 large onion, chopped
1 bell pepper (any color), chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
24 oz (680g) marinara sauce
14.5 oz (410g) can diced tomatoes, undrained
2 tsp Italian seasoning
Salt to taste
Black pepper to taste
2 (9-inch) refrigerated pie crusts OR pizza dough for a 9-inch deep-dish pan
2 cups (226g) shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
4 oz (113g) sliced pepperoni
2 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for topping)
1 large egg, beaten with 1 tbsp water (for egg wash, optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Brown the ground beef and Italian sausage in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Break up the meat as it cooks. Once fully browned, drain off any excess grease. This is a critical step for preventing a greasy Deep Hamburger Sausage & Pepperoni Pie.
