Ingredients
1/2 cup chicken broth (or water)
1/4 cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons rice vinegar
1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
4-6 dried red chilies (or 1 tsp red pepper flakes)
Instructions
Step 1: In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the chicken broth, soy sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, sugar, and cornstarch until the sugar and cornstarch are fully dissolved.
Step 2: Heat the vegetable oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic, grated ginger, and dried chilies. Sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.
Step 3: Give the sauce mixture another quick whisk and pour it into the saucepan with the aromatics.
Step 4: Bring the mixture to a gentle boil while whisking constantly. As the General Tso Sauce Recipe heats up, the cornstarch will activate and thicken the liquid.
Step 5: Once the sauce has thickened and turned glossy (about 1-2 minutes of simmering), remove from heat and use immediately to coat your favorite protein or vegetables.
Notes
For a gluten-free version, use tamari instead of soy sauce and ensure your hoisin sauce is certified gluten-free.
