GOLDEN RULES TO FOLLOW TO MAINTAIN THE MATTRESS FOR A LONG TIME

We all usually have a mattress at home for many years , at least until it loses its original shape and we are forced to buy a new one that provides us with optimal support.

However, in order to keep it for a long time , it is important to take the right care so as not to have it dirty and full of bad smells.

Therefore, let’s see some golden rules to follow to maintain the mattress for a long time.

Turn it the right side

First of all, the first secret to ” protect” the mattress and not compromise its comfort is to turn it on the right side.

We know, in fact, that each mattress has a side reserved for the winter season and a side reserved for the summer season , as it is more breathable .

It is important, therefore, to remember to turn it over not only because we can benefit from some characteristics of the mattress based on the season but also because in this way we can equalize the consumption of the two parts.

By doing so, in fact, the mattress will not tend to sag on one side only.

No to stains

Whether they are urine stains , blood stains, sweat stains or simple yellow stains due to the passage of time, always remember to remove them as soon as you can .

If too much time passes, in fact, they end up soaking into the fabric of the mattress and never go away. And so, then, we find the surface of the mattress full of stains scattered here and there.

To remove them, you can try one of my tricks by equipping yourself with:

  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon Marseille soap
  • 1 tablespoon of 10 volume hydrogen peroxide

Then mix the Marseille soap with the baking soda  and mix them well. After that, add the spoonful of hydrogen peroxide and mix until all three ingredients become a single mixture.

At this point, place a  microfiber cloth moistened in the mixture  created and rub it vigorously on the affected areas. Finally,  rinse with a cloth dampened with water only and let the mattress dry preferably in the open air .

Regular cleaning

To always have it as new, it is important to clean the mattress regularly , i.e. at least once every two months.

If you wonder how it is possible to wash the mattress , know that you can resort to dry cleaning , sprinkling its surface with a large quantity of bicarbonate and leaving it to act for about 30 minutes.

Then, suck up the bicarbonate with a vacuum cleaner equipped with the right nozzles  or directly with a  brush with soft bristles.

For an even more effective effect, we suggest adding  a few drops of tea tree essential oil to the baking soda  in order to “sanitize” these surfaces thanks to its  antibacterial and anti-odour properties.

Deeper cleaning

After  refreshing and dry cleaning  your sofa and mattress, you can also proceed with a deeper cleaning . To do it, I use a mixture made up of 1 liter of warm water, a spoonful of sodium bicarbonate  and  half a glass of lemon juice .

After that, I dip a soft cloth in the solution thus obtained, wring it well to remove excess water so that it is damp and not wet and pass it over the entire surface of the mattress.

Finally, I let it dry naturally in the open air , if possible or in any case by opening all the doors so that there is enough air.

Obviously, I remind you not to wet these surfaces too much with the cloth to avoid the formation of  humidity  and  bad odors .

Mattress cover

Finally, although it is a rather banal rule , it is important to underline it because it contributes a lot to not ruining the mattress and preventing it from getting too dirty .

What are we talking about? Of the mattress cover, which has the function of protecting it and extending its life, since it acts as a shield against dust or other agents.

The important thing, however, is that you wash it once a month at high temperatures in order to sanitize it and remove dust mites.
