There are open spaces adjacent to the houses which represent a real source of pride for how they are looked after. Flowers are one of the ways to give a high score to the elegance item. And knowing how to grow beautiful roses in the garden in full health is one of them.
There are different types (currently there are more than 150 known species and around thirty grow regularly in Italy, ed.) and with the most disparate colours. Some are also obtained in the laboratory through specific genetic modifications, such as blue or black roses. Although, regarding the latter, it seems that there is a spontaneous species in nature which is unfortunately in danger of extinction.
How to arrange roses in the garden?
These flowers are beautiful and symbolize many emotions and moods, especially in relation to the color of their petals. In addition to creating rose bushes, we could think about covering the lawn or a portion of it – obviously if we have a garden – with roses that can be planted in spring as well as in autumn. There is some useful information to know in this regard. For example, the depth in which to place the plants must be 5 centimeters, with a minimum space of 60 centimeters between them.
As regards the seeds, however, the advice is to plant them between December and January , therefore in the first part of winter and with 5 centimeters distance between them. We can also proceed in pots. The soil must always be well watered and should never be allowed to dry out. Furthermore, many nutrients are needed, to be prepared in a space that can enjoy light and air. However, it is necessary to take precautions and avoid planting roses in the garden in areas that are exposed directly to sunlight. This could create major problems for the plants during the summer.
When should roses be pruned in the garden?
As for fertilizer, it must be given every three or four weeks during the vegetation period and when the rose buds appear. Pay attention to how much water you give your roses : in summer it will be necessary to water them every day, either early in the morning or in the evening, thus avoiding doing so during the hottest hours, which could lead to them burning. But we must not give too much water either , otherwise we would cause the roots to rot and make the plant ill, as well as attracting harmful parasites.
We then avoid wetting the leaves and petals, the roses should be watered from below, near the stem or from the saucer, if we keep them on a balcony or terrace. In winter, however, we can give them water less frequently, but always observing the level of the soil, which must always and constantly remain moist. What about pruning? The ideal period is the months of February and March where it is very cold, and from November to December in areas where temperatures are milder. Withered flowers should be cut, as they take away precious energy from the plant.
How to protect roses in winter
Even in the winter period, the right care must be taken, with the soil where we planted the roses must be mulched using bark and dry leaves . This thing will protect the roots of the flowers from the cold. Then we will have to eliminate the withered or possibly parasite-infested parts and shorten the branches that are too long, which are an easy target of bad weather.
Strong wind or heavy rain could in fact break them. The temperature must be at least 10° and thermal protection in this case will be provided by the aforementioned mulch. The secret to making roses survive in the garden even in winter is to create a layer of about 4 cm, with leaves and bark that must be free from mould. Finally, for mulching it is necessary to know some things , in order to be able to implement it in the best possible way.
