Ingredients
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup fine grain salt
1/2 cup warm water (plus more if needed)
Instructions
Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and fine grain salt thoroughly.
Step 2: Gradually add the warm water, about 1/4 cup at a time, mixing with a spoon until a shaggy dough forms. You may not need all the water.
Step 3: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic, similar to play-dough.
Step 4: Roll the dough out to your desired thickness (1/4 to 1/2 inch is ideal for most crafts) using a rolling pin. Use a little extra flour if it sticks.
Step 5: Use cookie cutters, a knife, or your hands to shape the dough into ornaments, handprints, or other crafts. For hanging ornaments, use a straw to make a hole before drying.
Step 6: Carefully transfer your salt dough creations to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Step 7: Bake in a preheated oven at 200°F (95°C) for 2-4 hours, or until completely dry and hard. Thicker pieces may take longer. Alternatively, allow them to air dry for 2-3 days, flipping occasionally.
Step 8: Once completely dry and cool, your salt dough crafts are ready to be painted, sealed, or decorated as desired. Ensure they are fully dry to prevent mold.
Notes
This salt dough is for crafting purposes only and is not edible due to its high salt content. Ensure thorough drying, either by baking or air drying, to prevent mold and cracking for lasting keepsakes. For best results, use fine-grain table salt and gradually add water.
