But how nice is it to always have soft and fragrant laundry? Very very much! It is so pleasant to touch these soft clothes that we feel like we are being pampered!
For this we use the well-known commercially available fabric softeners , which do not actually nourish the fibers but rather consume them.
But you don’t have to miss out on this pleasant effect , because it is possible to make your own fabric softener from natural ingredients and from your pantry. How? Let’s find out together!
What will you discover?
How do you
Making your own natural fabric softener is child’s play because you need an ingredient that you probably know and probably already have at home: citric acid .
Citric acid is considered effective primarily because of its anti-limescale properties and is a biodegradable compound from citrus fruits that is best known for its effect as a natural softener. So you just need to equip yourself with the following:
- 150 g citric acid powder
- 1 liter of warm water
- 20 drops of essential oil
Therefore, first pour the citric acid into a measuring cup of warm water and mix thoroughly to facilitate dissolution. Then add the drops of essential oil with your favorite scent and continue mixing .
We recommend that you prefer scents such as lavender , mint, rose or citrus scents, as we usually find them in commercial fabric softeners and detergents.
Now pour everything into an old bottle to recycle and your fabric softener is ready to use! All you have to do is pour about 100 ml of this mixture into the detergent drawer every time you wash and… enjoy the magic: your clothes will become so soft and fragrant that you will want to wear them immediately! As if that wasn’t enough, citric acid also removes limescale deposits in the washing machine!
Other effective means of making clothes softer
In addition to DIY fabric softener citric acid , there are other ingredients you can use for this purpose. Let’s see them together!
vinegar and baking soda
Of course, when we talk about effective food ingredients on clothes, we cannot fail to mention vinegar and baking soda , known for their cleaning, degreasing and softening properties .
All you have to do is pour 2 cups of baking soda and a cup and a half of white vinegar into a measuring cup with 1 liter of warm water, then add a few drops of essential oil if you want .
Finally, pour everything into an old bottle, shake well and add about 60 ml of this product to the detergent drawer of the washing machine with each wash cycle: you won’t be able to do without it!
Note: There is a long-standing debate about the effects of vinegar on the environment. For this it is better to use alternative methods such as citric acid, which are less harmful to the environment
With chamomile
Finally, let’s look at one last trick that may seem strange to you , but proves to be very effective for softening laundry and especially towels .
We’re talking about chamomile! Yes, the drink we like to drink to relax. In fact, this product has softening properties that can soften the fibers of the garments.
All you need to do is bring 1 liter of water to a boil in a pot and then soak 4 sachets of chamomile infusion. Next, wait a few minutes and, when the mixture has completely cooled, add 20 drops of essential oil with the scent you prefer.
At this point all you have to do is transfer everything into a recycling bottle and pour a small glass of this fabric softener into the washing machine with each wash cycle. Chamomile not only makes your clothes softer, but also gives them an unprecedented scent!
Warnings
Although the remedies are natural and harmless, we always recommend that you consult the washing labels to avoid damaging your clothes.
